Sonata spatial

Composition for Marimbaphone and spatial electronic feedback by Bruno Friedmann, 2019;
Performed by Nagisa Shibata within the concert «retroaction«, at FabrikCulture, Hegenheim (France); 14/09/2019, 16 min

Premiere of «Sonata spatial», 14/09/2019. The Marimba is played by Nagisa Shibata.

Sonata spatial plays and interacts with the genuine spatial resonances of the concert hall and their stimulation by live electronics. The acoustic space as an accompanying instrument comes to the fore. With its languid and powerful sounds, it forms a counterpoint to the precisely tuned tones and vital twelve-tone cadences of the marimba.

Spatial resonances colour the sound, shape its content and always resonate as a complex chord. These spatial modes are stimulated in different ways by sounds and noises or can be intensified by an electronic feedback system, realised in Max/MSP.

Sonata spatial (score) is indeed structured like a sonata, a very inspiring and widely developed musical form. In this composition the lack of tonality naturally gives a lot of room for intentional replacements and extensions. The twelve-tone technique used was supplemented and extended by additional, derived series (see „The dodecaphonic concept of Sonata spatial).
