Project: Music with ETS (six serialised FMs)

Serial presets

The Max/MSP project Serialized FM generators provides two user interfaces, Serial presets or [ui-presets] and the Serial main window. To create a piece one have to choose first several parameters (see right: Serial presets). The duration of the piece and a range of tempi witch results in the durations of the note values. This is realised by the chosen row of numbers and a definite algorithm. The FM parameters (red) are also set by a range and calculated similarly. Important is also the physical interaction between them, see lecture IRCAM.

Next there is to define a basic row according to the rules of serialism but with arbitrary length. It is very charming to use some wellknown from the masters of serialism, for example the row of Anton Webern’s symphonie op. 21: 1 4 3 2 6 5 11 12 8 9 10 7, in which a palidrome is somehow realized.

Serial main window

Within the Serial main window the piece can be started and it shows the course of the piece. The six FM sound can be also moved in space, between loudspeakers, by another serialisation algorithm.

movements of the 6 FMs

The spatialization of the six FMs are done by components of the Max-software SPAT5 from IRCAM. Also the binaural distribution is possible, as it is done for the pieces at the end of this site. Originally the pieces are designed for 8 loudspeakers. As mentioned the spatial way of the FM sounds is also serialized, some path examples of the very interesting movements:

Berg, Wozzeck (b-r): 3 11 7 1 12 6 4 10 9 5 8 2
Flipflop: 15 1 14 2 13 3 12 4 11 5 10 6 9 7 8
random-row (b-r): 14 5 13 10 11 12 16 9 4 8 2 3 7 6 15 17 1
Boulez, Sonatine: 1 2 6 12 5 9 10 4 11 3 8 7

The axis› x and y represent the basic row and the retrograde. Other combinations have very similar figures or a kind of projection.

Here are several compositions realised by using different serial rows and parameters:
